Western Bay Museum is proudly known as one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s best little museums.
Located in the heart of Katikati, Western Bay Museum tells the stories of the people, places and events that have shaped the Western Bay of Plenty. With an engaging and ever-changing programme of exhibitions, the Museum brings together a rich mix of Māori culture and history, colonial and settler stories, local heritage and the unique characters and moments that make our region what it is today.
More than a place to look back, Western Bay Museum is a vibrant community hub where history is explored, shared and brought to life for visitors of all ages. Through exhibitions, events, education and community connections, the Museum creates opportunities to discover the stories of our past and consider how they continue to shape our future.
After ten years of extraordinary growth, determination and community partnership, Western Bay Museum is now embarking on the biggest chapter in its history. The Museum is temporarily closed for six months as it undergoes a comprehensive $1 million redevelopment and refurbishment, with plans to reopen in 2027.
The transformation will create an even more welcoming, engaging and inspiring space for locals, visitors and future generations, supporting the Museum's ambition to become Aotearoa New Zealand's best small museum.
When its doors reopen, visitors can look forward to a refreshed Museum experience, while continuing to discover the rich and diverse stories of the Western Bay of Plenty.
