In 1990, when Katikati was facing tough times, a group of volunteers formed Katikati Open-Air Art Incorporated. They aimed to cheer up the locals and attract visitors by painting Katikati’s history on the walls of the town.
Katikati Open Air Art began in 1990, when a small group of volunteers decided to lift community spirits and bring visitors back to the town by painting its stories on local walls.
What started as a hopeful idea has grown into one of Aotearoa’s longest‑standing outdoor art trails.
Today, Katikati is home to more than 92 artworks, including murals, sculptures, carvings, weaving, and contemporary installations that celebrate our people, our history, and our cultural identity.
KOAA continues to evolve, expanding our creative reach through new public artworks, deeper partnerships with mana whenua, youth‑led projects, and a renewed focus on community wellbeing through art. As we move forward, our vision is to strengthen our role as a cultural hub for the Western Bay of Plenty, growing our gallery presence, developing artist pathways, refreshing our digital identity, and creating public art that reflects the diverse voices of our community.
Katikati’s story is still being painted, carved, woven, and imagined, and KOAA is proud to guide that journey.
Visitors can take a guided tour of the murals which is an informative trip on the history of our small town. Contact 07 549 5250 for bookings.
